Green light for rail link

victoriaTHE BAILLIEU government will honour a $4.3 billion transport commitment to the western suburbs.
Last week the future of the Regional Rail Link, part of the Victorian Transport Plan, was being reviewed by the State Government.

While residents were left in the dark about the future of the program, a spokesperson for Transport Minister Terry Mulder told Star the project would go ahead as planned.

“Regional Rail Link is a project that is proceeding with committed funding from both the State and Federal Governments,” the spokesperson said.

“The Regional Rail Link team is continuing with the project as planned.”

State Member for Tarneit and former Roads and Ports Minister, Tim Pallas, told Star it would have been reckless for the government to walk away from the project.

“The Regional Rail Link is a critically important piece of infrastructure for the public transport system,” Mr Pallas said.

“If there is any suggestion that the project won’t go ahead, not only would the government lose credibility with the people of the West, but also the rural and regional areas, the federal government and the investment and infrastructure industries.”

Previously, Wyndham Transport Advisory Committee’s Jim Giddings said he would like to see the Baillieu Government advance the project beyond the former Brumby Government’s plans and electrify the line.
